Obesity - a major cause of sleep apnea
Sixty to seventy percent of sleep apnea patients are obese
One of the most dangerous problems associated with obesity is sleep apnea. The definition of sleep apnea is that the body temporarily stops breathing. Sometimes this cessation of breathing is not permanent and one can suffocate in their sleep. This is usually caused by something blocking the airway to the lungs like over sized tonsils, excess tissue in the mouth or throat. In case of obesity related sleep apnea, excess weight on the throat and chest attribute to the complications.
Sleep apnea due to Obesity is termed as Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome. This is seen as a serious risk as it puts pressure on the right side of the heart, resulting in fluid accumulation in the body. Asians are more likely than people of other ethnicities to have Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome at a lower BMI as a result of physical characteristics. It is twice as common in men when compared to women.
Some of the side effects of sleep apnea include High blood pressure, Restless sleep, Nocturnal snorting, Gasping, Choking etc. The worst of which could be death by choking in your sleep simply because of being overweight. Thus losing weight is the only key to fix all these problems.
As Morbid obesity and Sleep apnea is on the rise in the country, it is important to generate awareness among the common man about the ill effects of sleeping disorder due to stress and morbid obesity. We would like to pitch for a one - on – one interview with Dr. Manish Motwani, Chairman and Managing Director, Laparoscopic weight loss and General Surgeon, B – Lite Clinic.
